Yellow Butterfly Festival in Meinong

Yellow Butterfly Festival, dating back to 1995, is the first annual festival originating from concerns of the Hakka people in Meinung with culture, local ecology, and humanity.

The Festival consists of worships for God of the Earth (also called Tu-Di-Gong in Chinese) and of rite that follows the spirit of Hakka traditional observances. Yellow butterfly in the Festival serves as a vehicle for our apology to all beings in the Yellow Butterfly Valley , the place to be impounded by the Meining Dam, in stalemate because of huge, successful opposition from the locals, that was purposely chosen as the Festival site. The ones who lead the rite would invite both the “Twin Peak Earth God”, representing the deity of mountains, and “Yellow Butterfly Earth God”, representing all living creatures, to the worship platform; and under deities’ witnesses, we pronounce to Heaven and to Earth our commitments to conserve the Valley.

The 1st Festival, in 1995, featured an unveiling ceremony for the “Ecology Treaty for the Yellow Butterfly Valley”. The 3rd Festival, in 1997, brought forward the conception and visions of the “Ecological Nature Park” (the Park) that was planned to enclose the Valley. And in the spirit of showing grassroot power, the “Referendum on Ecological Nature Park” was held, in that year, to democratically take into account everyone’s opinion on the Park. To make the conception of the Park more widely known, the 6th Festival, in 2000, was held again with an aim to advocate the Park, and therefore, instead of foregrounding threats of the Meinung Dam, addressed as the main focus the development of the tobacco industry, the cultural and spatial meanings of irrigational channels, and other development aspects of Meinung. The Festival was in this way broadened both in its meaning and the issues addressed.

In general, the central values of the Festival lie in reflecting on the sustainable relationships among human beings and their surrounding natural environments; and in achieving Meinung’s agricultural ecology based on that relationship. In 2012, the 17th Festival emphasizes the values of public forest and natural hometown, and presents the “Butterfly Jigsaw Puzzle of Hope”, that symbolically shows people’s participation in public issues, which, we hope, will be instrumental to making Meinung an ecological homeland.
